AN3 Brake Hose Explained: Size, Applications Compatibility
AN3 Brake Hose Explained: Size, Applications and Compatibility
AN3 brake hose is widely used in motorcycle brake systems, performance vehicles, racing applications and custom hydraulic systems. For customers looking to upgrade from a conventional rubber brake hose, AN3 PTFE brake lines offer a practical combination of pressure stability, flexibility and long-term durability when the hose, fittings and routing are correctly matched.
However, choosing an AN3 brake hose is not simply a matter of selecting a hose by its outside appearance. The hose construction, inner diameter, fitting type, thread specification, hose length, bending radius and installation method all need to be considered.
What Does AN3 Mean on a Brake Hose?
AN3, also written as -3AN or Dash 3, is a standardized AN size designation commonly used with performance fluid lines. In brake applications, AN3 hose assemblies are frequently selected for compact hydraulic routing, especially on motorcycles, racing vehicles and custom brake systems.
The important point is that AN3 identifies the hose and fitting size category. It does not automatically mean that every AN3 hose assembly will fit every motorcycle or vehicle. The actual fitting thread, banjo design, sealing method and mounting position must still be checked before ordering.
AN3 Is Not the Same as the Fitting Thread
One common mistake during brake hose replacement is confusing the AN size with the thread specification of the fitting. An AN3 hose can be supplied with different end configurations depending on the application.
Important specifications to confirm
- AN hose size
- Inner diameter and outer diameter
- Hose length
- Fitting type
- Banjo angle
- Thread specification
- Thread pitch
- Washer and sealing arrangement
- Hose routing and minimum bending radius
Typical Construction of an AN3 Performance Brake Hose
A high-performance AN3 brake hose is commonly manufactured with a flexible inner tube and an external reinforcement layer. PTFE is frequently used as the inner tube material because of its chemical resistance and suitability for demanding fluid applications.
PTFE Inner Tube
PTFE provides a smooth internal surface for brake fluid flow and offers good resistance to heat and many automotive fluids. For performance brake systems, PTFE is commonly combined with a reinforcement layer to create a compact and durable brake line assembly.
Stainless Steel Braiding
Stainless steel braid provides mechanical reinforcement around the inner tube. It also helps protect the hose from external abrasion and movement during normal vehicle operation.
Protective Outer Coating
Depending on the application, the stainless steel braided hose can be supplied with an additional PVC or other protective coating. This can be useful when the hose is routed close to the motorcycle frame, body panels or other components where abrasion protection is important.
AN3 Brake Hose vs Conventional Rubber Brake Hose
Conventional rubber brake hoses are widely used as original equipment because they are economical and suitable for normal vehicle operation. However, performance-oriented customers often choose stainless steel braided PTFE brake lines when upgrading a braking system.
Why Upgrade to a Braided Brake Hose?
- More stable hose construction under hydraulic pressure
- Better resistance to external abrasion
- Improved resistance to heat and demanding operating conditions
- More consistent pedal or lever response when the original hose is aged or excessively flexible
- Better suitability for customized motorcycle and performance brake systems
- More options for hose length, fitting style and routing
An upgraded hose does not replace the importance of a properly maintained master cylinder, caliper, brake fluid and brake pads. The entire brake system must work together.

How to Choose the Correct AN3 Brake Hose
1. Check the Original Hose
Before ordering, inspect the original brake hose and record its total length, connection points, fitting orientation and routing. Taking several photos of the original assembly can make communication between the buyer and manufacturer much easier.
2. Confirm the Fitting Thread
AN3 refers to the hose size category, while the actual vehicle connection may use a particular thread specification. Do not order a hose assembly only by saying "AN3" without confirming the end fitting.
3. Check Fitting Angle and Orientation
Straight, 45-degree and 90-degree fittings can change how the hose sits after installation. Correct orientation reduces unnecessary twisting and helps keep the hose away from moving or hot components.
4. Select the Correct Hose Length
A brake hose should not be stretched during steering or suspension movement. At the same time, excessive hose length should be avoided because loose sections can contact the wheel, suspension or exhaust components.
AN3 Brake Hose Installation Tips
Keep the Hose Away From Heat and Moving Parts
During installation, route the hose away from exhaust components, sharp edges and areas where the hose can be pinched. On motorcycles, pay particular attention to full steering lock and front suspension movement.
Avoid Excessive Twisting
The fitting should be positioned correctly before the hose is tightened. Twisting the hose during installation can place unnecessary stress on the hose and fitting.
Bleed the Brake System After Installation
After replacing a brake hose, the hydraulic system must be properly bled. Air remaining inside the brake circuit can cause a soft lever or pedal and reduce braking performance.
Daily Inspection and Maintenance
- Check the hose for visible damage or abrasion.
- Inspect fittings and banjo connections for leakage.
- Check whether the hose is rubbing against the frame or wheel.
- Inspect the hose after suspension or steering modifications.
- Replace the hose if cracking, severe abrasion, leakage or structural damage is found.
Frequently Asked Questions About AN3 Brake Hoses
How often should a brake hose be replaced?
There is no single replacement interval suitable for every vehicle. The hose should be inspected according to the vehicle manufacturer's maintenance recommendations and replaced when aging, cracking, leakage, deformation or other damage is found. Modified vehicles that are used for racing or severe operating conditions may require more frequent inspection.
Does a braided brake hose really improve safety?
A properly designed and correctly installed braided brake hose can provide a more stable hose structure and better resistance to abrasion than a worn or unsuitable conventional hose. However, brake safety depends on the complete hydraulic system, including the master cylinder, caliper, brake fluid, brake pads, fittings and installation quality.
Is an AN3 brake hose suitable for every motorcycle?
No. AN3 is a size designation, not a universal vehicle-fitment standard. The hose must be matched with the correct fitting, thread, length, routing and braking system requirements.
